A tense situation continues in the southern Chinese port of Yantian. According to current information, 50 container ships are anchored in the roadstead outside the port, with a capacity of approximately 500,000 TEU.
A new outbreak of Covid 19 must be avoided in the 4 southern ports. Through Covid 19 prevention measures (disinfection and testing of the port workers) there were increased interruptions of the loading activities.
This means that 60% of the loaded containers could not be shipped as planned, but only after 7-12 days. The lack of empty containers increased through this delay. This situation will also significantly affect the loops of the shipping companies.
Normally, 400,000 TEU per week are transhipped at the port – in the current situation, only a fraction of the usual volume is possible. This leads to bigger problems.
The coming days will determine whether there will be a new international crisis in the shipping industry. If the bottlenecks are not resolved, there will be long-term effects.
Currently the average waiting time for ships to berth is approximately 3 days, which is double the normal waiting time. The rotation time of the containers has thus been extended by one-fifth and is now at 80-100 days.
According to industry experts, however, this should not lead to another “Suez Crisis”. Shipping company owners circumnavigate the port. This may also relax the situation in Europe because fewer ships are arriving from the Far East.
